What Is a Twin Zygosity DNA Test?
A twin zygosity DNA test analyzes the DNA profiles of twins to determine whether they share the same genetic makeup.
Identical twins develop from a single fertilized egg and share the same DNA
Fraternal twins develop from two separate eggs and do not share identical DNA
Physical appearance alone cannot reliably determine zygosity. DNA testing is the only definitive way to confirm whether twins are identical or fraternal.

FAQs About Twin DNA Tests
Below are some frequently asked questions about twin DNA tests.
-
Results from a home DNA test cannot be used as proof of paternity for legal reasons such as child support, custody, Social Security, etc. At-home results cannot be used because the DNA sample is collected by the test participants themselves. This means chain-of-custody protocol cannot be followed, and identities of tested parties cannot be independently verified.
-
Yes. Results for a home DNA test are just as accurate as they are for a legal paternity test. In fact, once DNA samples arrive at the lab, the process for testing is exactly the same for a home test as it is for a legal one. You can be certain your results for a home paternity test are accurate for the samples we are provided, but remember the results are just for peace of mind and personal knowledge only. If you need results for court or think you may in the future, call us.

Twins with separate placentas are not always fraternal. Only a twin zygosity DNA test can confirm the exact relationship between twins.
Before the widespread use of DNA testing, medical professionals (and therefore parents) assumed that if twins had their own amniotic sacs and their own placentas, then they must be fraternal, now we know this is not always true. Fraternal twins come from two eggs being fertilized by two sperm, and identical twins come from a single fertilized egg that splits in two.
BUT: If the fertilized egg splits (identical twins) before the placenta and amniotic sac starts to form (around days 2 or 3), then each baby develops its own sac and placenta. So what could look like fraternal twins to a doctor’s eye could actually be a set of identical twins!
-
No, there is no minimum or maximum age limit for a twin DNA test. Testing is routinely performed for newborn, toddler, teen, and adult twins.
-
Cheek swab samples are the industry standard for an at-home paternity test. Cheek swabs make DNA extraction by our laboratory’s professionals standardized and easy, which is one way to keep costs lower for our customers.
For Non-Standard samples, anything that is not an oral cheek swab, please see our Forensic Paternity Test page.If you have any questions regarding sample viability, reach out to one of our DNA experts.

Identical twins, from one fertilized egg that splits, share nearly 100% of their genetic identity, leading to a strong visual resemblance. Fraternal twins, from two separate eggs fertilized by different sperm, share about 50% of their genes, like regular siblings. Unlike identical twins, fraternal twins can be different sexes and may not look similar.
